Dropshipping is a retail order fulfillment method characterized by not requiring the store to keep the products it sells in stock. Instead, when a sale is made, the merchant purchases the product from a third party and ships it directly to the customer. This practice is common among entrepreneurs who choose to sell their products through platforms such as Amazon, taking advantage of the prestige of this e-commerce giant.

In essence, the merchant never sees or physically handles the product being offered. This business model differs from standard retail in several key aspects, the most notable being the absence of the need to own and store an inventory.

Managing physical products in traditional retail involves concerns such as warehouse management, packaging and shipping orders, maintaining detailed inventory records, handling returns, and making ongoing restocks. Because there’s no need to purchase or maintain inventory, fixed costs in dropshipping are low. This allows many businesses to operate comfortably from a home office. As the business grows, these costs may increase slightly but will remain far below those of a traditional store.

Dropshipping is a business that can be managed from virtually anywhere with an Internet connection. As long as you can communicate with your suppliers and customers, you have the freedom to run and oversee your business from any location.

Since there’s no need to purchase products in advance, you can offer a wider variety of items to your potential customers. If your suppliers have an item in stock, you can list it online at no additional cost.

Scalability

Unlike traditional businesses, where an increase in sales brings more workload, dropshipping allows for easier scalability. Most of the additional order processing work is handled by suppliers, making expansion less costly and more efficient.

Disadvantages of Dropshipping

Low profit margins

In highly competitive niches, profit margins tend to be low due to the ease of entry into dropshipping. Merchants often try to increase revenue by selling at very low prices, which can lead to reduced margins and difficulties maintaining profitability.

Inventory control

Managing inventory can be challenging when working with multiple suppliers fulfilling orders for several merchants. Keeping stock synchronized accurately may be difficult, especially if suppliers lack proper technology.

Shipping logistics

Shipping products from multiple suppliers can increase shipping costs and logistical complexity. Coordinating deliveries from different sources can be challenging, and shipping delays are common in e-commerce, both in dropshipping and conventional models.

Supplier errors risk

Even the best dropshipping suppliers can make mistakes when processing orders. These errors must be handled by the merchant, which can affect the business’s reputation.
