This may sound familiar to many of you. Or maybe not. The point is that I want to share it with you, in case it’s useful. This blog is aimed at small and medium-sized business owners. But it’s not just for them. I believe this post can be useful for almost anyone, for our personal life and also if you are an employee, to interact better with your colleagues, bosses, and subordinates within a company.

Those who know me know that I’m passionate about productivity. I believe it’s the only way to ensure our position doesn’t disappear: making use of technology to become more productive and efficient. Just being busy won’t be enough in the near future. One of the things that has helped me most in being productive was changing my mindset when it comes to setting goals in my life. In a productivity talk with Aritz Urresti, I learned about the SMART method.

The concept of “SMART goals” refers to an acronym in English. The method states that the goals or objectives we set in life should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound.

The main reason is that our brain does not understand or absorb general goals well. From my experience, it’s not that we don’t understand them; the point is that when we set specific goals, our brain almost unconsciously starts working at full capacity to achieve them. Because when a goal is specific, the question quickly arises… How am I going to achieve it?

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

My reflection is that the same applies to communication. It must be specific. This is my experience as an entrepreneur. The more specific you are with your clients, your suppliers, or your coworkers when communicating, the better things will go. You will also become more productive and efficient.

Here are some additional tips related to this topic:

  • When communicating, look the person straight in the eyes
  • The best friend of memory is praise
  • Be empathetic. If things didn’t go as you expected, it may be that you didn’t explain yourself clearly
  • Celebrate both individual and team successes
  • Delegated responsibilities are assumed publicly but enforced privately
